| Lisa Rands
The Hole in One Boulder, Unaweep, Colorado Photo by Wills Young Lisa Rands is looking for a new job. The 24-year-old climber from Claremont, California, who placed first in the ASCF Bouldering National last March, says she's moving back from Colorado in search of better climbing. "It's basically because [Wills and I] want to be closer to good year-round bouldering," she says. But if you ask us, we think the job hunt and relocation have something to do with their pet fish, a nine-year-old Turquoise Severum. Why? Because all the conversations with Lisa and her significant other, Wills Young, eventually lead back to the fish. Ask them about their move to Colorado last year, for instance. "Just a day before we were leaving I suddenly thought, 'What am I going to do with my fish?'" Lisa says. A local pet shop helped avert a crisis with advice to transport the fish in a cooler. "[The drive] took longer than we'd expected because Lisa insisted on stopping quite often to check on the fish," says Wills, who later named the fish Bubbles. "She'd be there, looking into the cooler in the back of the car, talking to it in baby talk." And what do they do for entertainment in the mountains of Colorado? "We don't get any television channels up here," says Lisa, "so we spend a lot of time watching the fish tank." Call it a theory, but, personally, we think they're moving because Bubbles misses California. Lisa and Wills are going to have to learn: You can't raise a good fish by giving it everything it wants. |
